EV cars on fire

In this article, we will tell you how to safely control EV car fires to prevent collateral damage. Why? Because electric car fires are very different from normal car fires. EV fires are hotter than regular carfires because of the lithium batteries. This can cause dangerous situations, especially in car parks or car decks on ships, where cars are parked close to each other.

When it comes to electric vehicles or EV cars, problems can occur when there is a malfunction. In that case, heat often builds up and can cause a fire. Even though this risk of fire seems small, an EV car fire is far more dangerous. An electric car burns differently than a conventional car and is far more difficult to extinguish.

Due to the lithium batteries of an electric car, the battery cells can overheat and cause a chain reaction. As a result of this, the fire can start up again after putting it out. Believe it or not, it can take up to 24 hours for all the cells to cool down.

Fire⚡️Isolator – The Ultimate FI-BL0906 fire blanket

Because controlling an EV car fire is significantly different than putting out a normal car fire, we created the Ultimate FI-BL0906 fire blanket. This fire blanket is the perfect method to isolate smoke and fire in case of EV car fires. Our high-temperature resistant car Fire Blanket (up to 1600 degrees C°, tested according to ISO EN 13501-1) provides control of the situation and makes sure that collateral damage is minimal when deployed quickly enough. Note that a blanket alone will NOT kill the fire in the battery. It provides control of the situation.

This fire blanket is reusable (up to a max of 6-7 EV car fires) and can be used for both electric and normal fires of cars, SUVs, and motorcycles. The fire blanket is suitable for professional firefighters and other organizations that may have to deal with multiple fires.

How to control EV car fires with our fire blanket

To use the Ultimate FI-BL0906 fire blanket, you need at least two people. As you can see in the photo above, the fire blanket is large enough to cover an SUV. Both men using the fire blanket take a side of it, then carefully place it over the burning car. The fire blanket must cover the vehicle entirely, so make sure all parts of the car are covered. The fire blanket can withstand very high temperatures but does not stand up well to sharp objects or overly rough handling of the blanket. The installation of the blanket must therefore be done carefully, without hard, jerky movements, so as not to damage the fabric or the loops.

Once the blanket is placed successfully over the car, the next steps of the Fire Isolator concept are deployed:

  • The aerosol units interrupt the chemical chain reactions occurring in the flames and suppress the fire resulting in further temperature reduction.
  • The water mist lance for direct insertion into the battery of the EV car, to spray water over the blanket in order to reduce toxic fumes and smoke and to keep the car cool.

You can see the full Fire Isolator concept in action in this video.

After use, simply rinse the blanket with water and store it in its Smart bag.
